BMW Recalls 156,000 Vehicles For Camshaft Flaw

BMW will call back a long list of vehicles because of a problem with its “VANOS” variable camshaft timing.

In total, the company says its campaign affects 156,137 vehicles in the U.S. This is the same issue that BMW initiated a recall campaign for in China a month ago. The issue can reduce engine power and cause damage if unaddressed. BMW says that in some cases, the bolts holding the variable camshaft timing unit housing can become loose or even break.

In those cases, the “check engine light” will come on followed by the “check control message” light.

BMW’s 1, 3 and 5 Series models from the 2010 through 2012 model years are affected. So are the 5 Series GT, 20120 6 Series and 2010 to 2012 Z4 sports cars. BMW’s X3, X5 and X6 crossovers from the 2010 to 20120 model year are also being called back.
